It used to be that addiction treatment encompassed detox and basic therapy. If the client could survive those two things, they were on the way to a successful recovery. Unfortunately, nothing is ever quite that simple. Over the past decade or so, the addiction treatment community has come to understand addiction treatment is a complicated process. Therapy might well help identify the causes of an addiction, but there’s more to focus upon than causes. For that reason, many top addiction treatment professionals like to use evidence based treatment modalities. Pearl of the Sea Retreat is proud to offer an evidence based treatment center.

What is Evidence Based Treatment?

Woman opens up to her evidence based treatment centers therapistEvidence based practice is not really a kind of addiction treatment. Instead, it’s a process for legitimizing treatment methods. Using a scientific approach, a particular treatment option is evidence based if it meets five criteria:

  • The option has gone through thorough research and scientific testing, eventually getting published in a relevant journal
  • The outcomes of testing support the intended thesis or objective of treatment
  • Other scientists and treatment professions can duplicate the process and get the same results
  • The same treatment method works in multiple testing environments
  • While therapists continue using the method in evidence based treatment centers, the results continue to be consistent

Types of Treatment Used in an Evidence Based Treatment Center

Once a treatment option earns the distinction of being evidence based, it tends to draw interest from top-level treatment specialists. The moniker “evidence based treatment center” feels good and sound good.

Currently, there are as many as a dozen different addiction treatment modalities that could qualify as evidence based. In reality, the addiction treatment industry consistently uses five basic options: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Motivational Interviewing and Twelve-Step Facilitation Therapy.

At our evidence based addiction treatment center Florida location, we use all five options. However, we find the first three options to be the best evidence based practices. With that in mind, let’s look at these options in more depth.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

CBT is an individualized therapy program that focuses on helping clients talk through negative feelings/thoughts as well as how those feelings/thoughts turn into negative behaviors like abusing drugs/alcohol. After identifying negative feelings/thought and behaviors, the client then learns how to manage stressful situations, their emotions, and traumatic life experiences.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Evidence based practice that focuses on teaching clients to recognize and accept they have certain behaviors. Furthermore, clients learn which coping skills they will need to get past those behaviors and react is a positive manner.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

At our evidence based addiction treatment center Florida location, we believe a lot of addictions develop from trauma. This particular treatment modality takes the client through rapid eye movement exercises led by an EMDR therapist. The purpose of this approach is to bring the client face-to-face with their trauma(s) and be able to maintain a positive sense of self.
